Common questions
The things people ask
before they call.
- What do you actually accept?
Laptops, desktops, tablets, phones, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, docking stations, drives, cables, adapters, speakers, webcams, networking gear. Any brand. Any operating system — Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, or something long discontinued. Any age.
Working or not. A machine that will not power on is still useful to us: it is where the screen, the memory, the drive caddy and the keyboard for the next machine come from.
- Is there anything you turn down?
Not so far. If you are looking at something and wondering whether it is too old, too broken or too odd, that is exactly the thing we would like you to offer us. Send it and let us make the call — that is our job, not yours. God has used stranger materials than a dead Dell.
- What happens to my files?
The drive gets erased before the machine goes anywhere near the bench. Overwritten, not just “deleted” — nothing is recoverable afterwards. Tick the box when you book and we’ll email you written confirmation with the machine’s reference number once it’s done.
If that isn’t enough, choose the other option on the form and we will fit the machine with a different drive and physically destroy the one your data was on. We pay for the replacement — it costs you nothing. Plenty of people ask for this.
A drive that fails to wipe is destroyed rather than reused or resold, whichever option you picked.
- Do you really come and pick it up?
Yes, anywhere in El Paso and the towns around it, at no cost. One laptop or a storage room full — both are worth the trip. Tell us if anything is heavy or awkward and we’ll bring two people and a bigger vehicle.
- Can I mail something in from out of town?
Not yet. We don’t have the infrastructure to handle shipping, so for now it’s El Paso and the surrounding areas only. If you’re just outside that, ask anyway and we’ll see what we can work out rather than turn hardware away.
- Can I nominate myself?
Yes, and plenty of people do. There is a checkbox at the top of the nomination form that collapses it down to just your own details. A self-nomination is treated exactly the same as one that comes from a teacher or a neighbor.
- Do you check income or ask for documents?
No. No proof of income, no benefits letter, no application fee, and nothing to pay back. We ask what the machine is for and what is going on, in your own words, because that is what tells us which machine to build for you. We have never asked a family what they believe and we never will.
All of it runs on trust. We only ask that you take a machine if you genuinely need one — there is nearly always somebody waiting behind you, and taking one you don’t need costs them rather than us.
- How long is the wait?
It depends entirely on what the Lord has provided lately. Machines go out as they come off the bench, so a month where somebody clears out an office moves much faster than a quiet one. We’ll email you either way, including when the honest answer is that it will be a while. Nobody gets quietly dropped from the list.
- Will you contact the person I nominated?
Not out of the blue. We come back to you first. Nobody finds out they were nominated from a stranger’s email.
- Do I have to be a Christian to receive a computer?
No. We are a Christian charity and we are open about why we do this, but we have never asked a family what they believe and we never will. If you need a computer, that is the only qualification there is.
Nobody will be preached at, put on a mailing list, or asked to attend anything. You get a working computer and our sincere good wishes, and that is the end of the transaction.
- Can I get a receipt for my donation?
Yes — ask when you book and we’ll send you an itemised receipt listing what you handed over and when.
But to be plain about it: we are not yet a registered 501(c)(3), so your donation is not tax-deductible at this time. The application is in progress and we will say so here the day that changes. We would rather tell you now than have you find out from your accountant in April.
- Can I help out?
We can always use hands on the bench, drivers for pickup runs, folks who are good at explaining a new machine to somebody using one for the first time, and people willing to pray for this work. Email us and tell us what you’re good at.
Still unsure
If your question isn’t here, email info@c4cep.com. If it’s about whether we’ll take something, the answer is yes. And if you’d like us to pray for something while we’re at it, say so — we mean that.
